Build, Chat and Plan modes

Every message you send in Studio runs in one of three modes. Build mode generates and edits code. Chat and Plan modes let you ask questions and think through your next change without touching the codebase or spending credits.

Build mode

Build mode is the default. When you send a message in Build mode, our AI reads your project files, writes the code changes needed, and rebuilds the app in your sandbox. The preview updates automatically when the build succeeds.

Build mode turns cost credits. The exact amount depends on how much thinking and how many file edits the turn involves. See Credits for the pricing details.

Chat mode

Chat mode is for conversational questions: asking how the generated code works, getting a quick explanation, or asking for ideas. The AI responds in text only and never edits any files.

Chat turns are free, up to the daily cap described below.

Plan mode

Plan mode is for longer planning discussions. The AI thinks through your request, proposes a step-by-step plan, and shows you what it intends to change, but stops before touching any files. You review the plan and then switch to Build mode to execute it.

Plan turns are free, up to the same daily cap as Chat.

Daily free limit for Chat and Plan

Chat and Plan turns share a single daily allowance. The counter resets at midnight UTC. Once you reach the limit, free turns are paused until the next day. You can still send Build mode messages as long as you have credits. The current limit is shown in the Usage panel in Studio.

Note

The daily free-turn limit applies across both Chat and Plan mode combined. A day that mixes Chat and Plan turns counts both toward the same cap.

Choosing the right mode

You want to make a change to the app. Use Build mode.
You want to understand how something works or explore ideas. Use Chat mode. No credits spent.
You want to think through a larger feature before committing to it. Use Plan mode. No credits spent, and you see a structured breakdown before any edits happen.
